So, those times

when you're at your computer, supposed to be writing, but you just think you might as well just check your emails very quickly, so you do, and it turns out you haven't had any emails in the 20 minutes since you last checked so you think you should probably just go on facebook to see if anything has happened to one of your not-even-a-friend-just-someone-you-went-to-school-with-15-years-ago-friends and their status updates like "gonna get rite pissed tonite lol bring it on" and now you're on you might as well read everyone's status updates anyway and all the comments from other people you don't know have never met will never meet then after an impossible to measure amount of time something inside you clicks and you feel a bit like a spy and a lot dirty for foraging around other people's lives so you get out of there asap and check your email again then maybe bbc news just in case something massive has happened in the world and while you're there you might as well check the 'entertainment' news and maybe make yourself feel a bit better by clicking on 'arts and culture' til you realise you've never actually heard of anything in that section really so you check your emails again and think 'that's enough now, internet! Leave me alone: I must write.' (a blog post)

I have days like these far to often. Today for example.

How are you?

Hullo, you! Yes, how are you?

Web surfing - that was me (with the exception of facebook!) yesterday and this morning - and now! But then, when I have no opportunity to write I moan about it!

Even a lowly blog post is writing of sorts - good to read you :) And everything else will happen when it's ready.

Hi Alex and Rachel - thanks to you both for asking how I am - I'm okay :)

I would like the internet to come into my house for only one hour a day, and that hour can be spread out over the entire day.

I've thought about getting an egg timer and everytime I go online set it to 5 minutes. Anyone have any techniques they use to limit their time online? (I know the short answer - disconnect internet)

Hey - I don't forbid myself the internet - I have a window of "tosh" open and I know it's there but because it's allowed I seldom use it! Emails I do first and last thing and lunch time. I think tinternet's a good tool for when your attention's lapsed and you can have a quick squidge and get back down to the writing but if it sucks you in then you need to switch the darn thing off for a while and go cold turkey! We have a very dodgy connection and the internet is down quite a lot so I get over my addiction to it on a regular basis! My major downfall comes when I am researching a fact for my writing and, like yesterday, I stumble on something else and get completely engrossed - I now know all there is to know about octopuses! Bonkers! Oh, and the blogging...I need to curb that...

Not much of a help am I.... :)

Hi Teresa

I completely agree with you - I used to get home earlier than I do now - those 45mins should have been GOOD writing time but I mostly found myself looking through pics of 'friends' on facebook.

I have to switch off the wireless box to get anything done!

Rachel - I imagine your dodgy link is both handy and annoying - there are times you just neeeeeed Google to tell you something.

Jessica - yes, looking through other people's photos is another way of ensuring you get that icky dirty facebook feeling!

And for as much as I dislike it, it's how I'm choosing to use my time online that sometimes makes me feel frustrated. It's not really the internet's fault.
